Burges Snail (Knightshayes Court) c.1878
The surviving house at Knightshayes in Devon was designed by the Gothic revivalist William Burges between 1869 and 1874. The eccentric and at times controversial architect liked to dress in medieval costumes and was considered a specialist in interior design. This original, incredibly charming wallpaper still adorns the walls of one of the bathrooms. It is believed that the wallpaper was not reapplied until a later renovation, after many years of subsequent generations of residents trying to minimize the flamboyant Gothic-Victorian style of the house.
