Mandalay (Bateman’s) c.1712
This tree of life pattern is derived directly from the leather wallpaper in the dining room at Bateman's in East Sussex. Intricate designs like these were inspired by 17th-century Indian chintz weaves, which often depicted meandering flowering trees with birds among the branches. Leather wallpaper was the forerunner of wallpaper as we know it today. And although the manufacture of such leather panels required a different skill, their application and effect is very similar to that of early wallpaper. They are of proven Dutch origin and were bought in 1902 by the Rudyard Kipling couple for 100 guineas after they had bought Bateman's as a family home. The width of the 'Mandalay' wallpaper is 70cm and the pattern has been adjusted to repeat effortlessly and continuously along the wall.
