Briar Rose, ca. 1845-1915
Originally designed by children's book illustrator Walter Crane, this wallpaper has an Arts and Crafts theme, evident in the densely stylized nature motifs. Many of Crane's drawings were picked up from children's room wallpaper. 'Briar Rose' was originally used as the background for a wallpaper titled 'Sleeping Beauty' which featured characters from the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty amongst the roses. The wallpaper was found at Oxburgh Hall and little is known about where in the house it was used, as much of the original now exists only in loose pattern pieces. The wallpaper was originally produced by the London company Jeffrey & Co. and is now available in the LITTLE GREENE collection in three soft combinations and three bright colours.
