Aderyn – Erddig ca. 1770
In the late 18th century, Erddig in Wales was the family home of Philip Yorke and his wife Elizabeth. They likely chose this hand-painted Chinese wallpaper, intricately adorned with exquisite birds and flowers, for the guest room of the estate. The original painting was delicately crafted, featuring birds appearing in pairs—a subtle nod to the Chinese concept of balancing opposites (Yin and Yang). The flowers depicted here include magnolias (symbolizing feminine beauty) and peonies (symbolizing nobility). Numerous elements from the original were retained and transformed into a versatile and contemporary bird and flower pattern in five distinct colorways.
